Growing up in Atlanta as the youngest of seven siblings, DC Young Fly knew from a young age that he wanted to be an entertainer. DC Young Fly, born John Whitfield, hails from Atlanta, Georgia, specifically Adlerville Bankhead Camberton on the west side. He was born on May 2nd, 1992, and grew up as the youngest among seven siblings - three brothers and three sisters. During his early years, he sang in the church choir, which sparked his passion for performing.

John attended Benjamin E. Mays High School, where he gained a reputation as a class clown and occasionally got into trouble. Despite this, he displayed a strong work ethic and attempted to find a job at the age of 14, eventually securing one at a warehouse when he turned 18. However, he didn't enjoy the job and moved on to other pursuits.

In honor of his late brother Richard, John got a face tattoo of the letters "DC," which stands for "the crew." His brothers also have similar tattoos as a tribute to their late sibling. John was determined to pursue a career in entertainment and began building his social media presence on platforms like Twitter, where he gained a following of 165,000.

His breakthrough on social media came when he joined Vine on November 21st, 2013, posting high-energy comedy videos, roasts, and sketches. As Vine's popularity declined, he transitioned to other platforms like Facebook and YouTube, where he continued to gain a significant following. On Instagram, he experienced remarkable success, amassing over 5.3 million followers to date.

In 2014, DC Young Fly's social media growth skyrocketed, largely due to his hilarious roasts of popular celebrities such as Meek Mill, LeBron James, Lil Wayne, and Drake. One of his most successful series involved roasting celebrities and responding to their fashion choices with the catchphrase "Junk man, beat his ass," which became a hashtag trend.

One of his most notable roasts was aimed at Kevin Hart in September 2014. Kevin responded with a tweet warning DC Young Fly not to mess with him, claiming he was undefeated in roasting. Kevin then posted a shirtless picture of DC Young Fly on Instagram with a series of humorous burns in hashtag form, igniting a playful beef between the two.

Alongside his social media success, DC Young Fly pursued a career in music as a rapper under the name "Young Fly." He released his first mixtape titled "Industry Most Wanted" in March 2014 and later appeared on a track called "DC Young Fly Speaks" from Mike Will Made It's "Ransom" mixtape in December of the same year.
