How Playboi Carti Captivated the Music World with His Distinctive Style

Prior to making his mark in the music industry, Playboi Carti, whose real name is Jordan Terrell Carter, rose to fame with the release of his breakout single "Magnolia" in 2017, featured on his eponymous debut mixtape, "Playboi Carti."

Known for his distinctive style and energetic performances, Carti captivated listeners with his melodic ad-libs. His debut studio album, "Die Lit," dropped in 2018, containing notable tracks like "Wokeuplikethis*" featuring Lil Uzi Vert and "Shoota" with Lil Uzi Vert.

With his fusion of trap, punk, and alternative rap elements, Carti played a crucial role in shaping the SoundCloud rap and mumble rap movements. Praised by critics and fans alike, "Die Lit" was hailed as one of the finest albums of its time, while Carti's social media presence grew, amassing millions of followers on Instagram and Twitter.

Despite personal ups and downs, including a high-profile relationship with Iggy Azalea, Carti's unwavering talent and devoted following have solidified his status as a legendary figure in the music scene.

Playboi Carti has achieved great success and is currently at the top of his game. However, his journey to this point was not an overnight success. It took a long time for him to reach this level of fame and fortune.

Before he could afford to drive luxury cars and enjoy the fruits of success, Carti experienced financial struggles and worked as a regular guy. He went from being a "broke boi" with aching pockets, searching for opportunities and hoping to make it big, to now flexing in new locations and putting mileage on his expensive cars in the middle of summer.

Carti's transformation from an everyday worker to a model for renowned fashion brands is an impressive feat. He started off working at H&M but eventually transitioned into the world of high fashion.

Carti, born Jordan Terrell Carter, was born on September 13, 1996, the same day that Tupac died. This coincidence adds to his legendary status.

Growing up in the suburb of Riverdale, just south of Atlanta, with a population of around 15,000, Carti faced challenges. Riverdale was ranked as the ninth worst suburb in Atlanta, contrasting the glamorous image one might imagine.

Despite the difficulties, Carti's passion for music prevailed. He had a diverse range of musical influences, including Lil Wayne, Lil John, Michael Jackson, Prince, Young Jeezy, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and the ASAP Mob.

Currensy was particularly significant to him, becoming his favorite rapper. Carti's early experiences with rapping occurred at his grandma's house, where his family encouraged him and showed their support by tossing some dollars his way.

He attended Riverdale High School, which boasts successful alumni like T.I. and Ciara, providing him with inspiring figures to look up to.

Before fully pursuing a career in music, Carti had aspirations of becoming a basketball player. During high school, he joined the basketball team and looked up to legendary players such as Michael Jordan, T-Mac, Vince Carter, and his personal favorite, Allen Iverson.

However, his commitment to the sport waned, and after a disagreement with the coach and a fight, he decided to quit the team. With basketball out of the picture, Carti needed a new hobby.

Recognizing his talent with words, his friends suggested that he try writing verses. Encouraged by their support, Carti began experimenting with rapping, initially under the name Sir Cartier.

He started creating songs on GarageBand, and although he initially saw it as a fun endeavor, his classmates recognized his potential. While Carti wasn't particularly focused on college, his parents saw music as a promising alternative to potentially dangerous paths he could have taken in the streets.

Carti's early music showed promise, catching the attention of a friend who arranged a meeting with local producer Ethereal. Ethereal was selective about his collaborations, which suggests that he saw something special in Carti.

When they met, Carti expressed a desire for unique beats, departing from the usual trap style. Both artists were determined to create timeless music together, and their first collaboration resulted in a song called "Lost."

Another early supporter of Carti was Fatmankey, and the three of them worked on developing Carti's sound.

Carti made a conscious decision to prioritize music above all else, including work and school. In fact, his dedication to music often led to frequent class skipping, almost jeopardizing his graduation.

However, he managed to graduate while simultaneously reaching new heights in his musical career. During this period, he made a significant change to his name, dropping the "Sir" and adopting the moniker Playboi Carti.

During this period, Carti was exploring various flows and experimenting with different sounds, even rapping over the startup music from PlayStation 2. His talent caught the attention of Father, the founder of Awful Records, who saw potential in him and brought him on board to help develop his unique sound.

It was Carti's track "Broke Boi" that started gaining traction, with production by MexikoDro and nearly 40 million plays on SoundCloud. Another early hit for Carti was "Fetti."

Before his music career took off, Carti had worked various jobs, including bagging groceries and later at H&M. However, after only four days on the job, he realized he needed to quit and focus solely on making music.

He left his hometown and traveled to the Bronx, New York, where he stayed with family. It was in New York that he connected with members of the ASAP Mob, particularly ASAP Bari, who took him under his wing.

Carti also formed a close friendship with Ian Connor, bonding over their shared interest in fashion, initially unaware that Carti was a rapper.

These relationships and connections led Carti to meet ASAP Rocky during SXSW in 2014, an encounter that left a lasting impact on him. The meeting solidified Carti's determination to enhance his style and presence.

Recognizing the power of the connection, Carti decided to stay in Texas for a while to be around Rocky. With Carti's online buzz growing from his singles, he locked himself in the studio, building anticipation for his debut mixtape.

Despite dropping snippets and building excitement among fans, no official release came. In response, Carti's dedicated fan base created an unofficial mixtape called "In Abundance," which gained significant attention with close to 450,000 plays on DatPiff.

Meanwhile, ASAP Rocky, who had been a strong supporter of Carti throughout the wait, announced that Carti had signed a deal with Interscope. Carti eventually returned with tracks like "wokeuplikethis" and  "lookin," which satisfied his eager fans until the official release of his music.

Playboi Carti began to make more public appearances, performing at GOOD Music pop-up shows, participating in the Yeezy Season 5 fashion show, and modeling for Drake's OVO summer clothing line.

Finally, on April 14th, 2017, he released his self-titled mixtape, which achieved significant success, reaching number six on the US rap charts and 12 on Billboard's Hot 200. During this time, Carti formed a creative partnership with producer Pierre Bourne, resulting in captivating collaborations.

One of the standout tracks from the mixtape was "Magnolia," although initially Carti struggled to perform the Milly Rock dance associated with the song. "Magnolia" peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a summer anthem, with the song eventually going 2x platinum.

Carti has continued to evolve his sound and deliver captivating live performances, consistently releasing hit songs. His recent album, "Die Lit," became a highly referenced project on Twitter, as fans eagerly anticipate his next release.

When it comes to critiques of his work, only ASAP Rocky and Lil Uzi Vert are considered authorized to provide feedback. Carti maintains a close creative relationship with them, and they are the only ones he welcomes criticism from.

Fans are still eagerly awaiting the release of Carti's collaborations with Frank Ocean, as well as the numerous unreleased songs he likely has with Lil Uzi Vert. With so much to anticipate, there is a lot to look forward to in Carti's future.

In summary, Playboi Carti's journey from his humble beginnings to his current success has been a result of hard work, dedication, and a passion for music. He overcame financial struggles and found his way into the world of fashion and fame, solidifying his status as a legendary figure in the industry.
