Before achieving Hollywood fame and becoming an international singing sensation, Jennifer Lopez had a vibrant career in dancing. She then transitioned into the world of acting and music, making big waves in both industries.

Despite facing challenges and criticism, Jennifer Lopez persevered and built an empire from her humble upbringing in the Bronx. She pursued her dreams even when her parents didn't support her, eventually moving out on her own.

Her career started as a backup dancer and gained momentum when she became a famous Fly Girl on the 90s show "In Living Color."

Throughout her career, Jennifer Lopez faced setbacks such as bad movie reviews and publicized relationships, including marriages to Mark Anthony and high-profile romances with celebrities like Ben Affleck and P. Diddy. However, she emerged as a household name and continued to rise to success.

Jennifer Lopez's resilience and talent have propelled her career, and she continues to be admired for her beauty and accomplishments. Her journey serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that hard work and determination can lead to great success.

Below, is a brief history of her life prior to fame.

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on July 24th, 1969, in the Castle Hill neighborhood of the Bronx. Her parents, Guadalupe and David Lopez, are of Puerto Rican descent. She grew up with her two sisters, Linda and Leslie, in a modest upbringing. Her mother worked as a teacher, and her father was a computer specialist.

From a young age, at five years old, Lopez began taking singing and dancing lessons. She even toured New York with her school at the age of seven. Her parents emphasized the importance of a strong work ethic and being able to speak English. They encouraged their daughters to perform at home, singing and dancing for each other and their friends, as a way to keep them out of trouble.

Lopez attended Catholic schools and participated in gymnastics, track and field at a national level, and was a member of her school's softball team.  During her final year of high school, she took a chance and auditioned for a small role in the low-budget film "My Little Girl" in 1986, which marked her first film appearance. This made her develop a passion for fame and the entertainment industry.

After graduating from high school, Lopez enrolled at Baruch College in Manhattan. She also worked in a legal office to support her pursuit of dance and singing. However, her college experience lasted only one term as she dropped out to focus on her dream career and began auditioning for dance roles.

In 1991, Lopez was selected as a backup dancer for the group New Kids on the Block and performed with them during their performance of "Games" at the 18th Annual American Music Awards. Shortly after, she gained her first regular high-profile job as a Fly Girl on the television program "In Living Color."

She initially became the runner-up out of 2,000 applicants but eventually secured the role when the original winner couldn't accept the job. This opportunity allowed her to work alongside notable figures such as the Wayans brothers and Jim Carrey.

After her stint on "In Living Color," Jennifer Lopez moved to Los Angeles with her then-boyfriend David Cruz to pursue her acting career. She remained a regular cast member on the show until 1993 when she decided to focus on acting full-time.

During this time, Lopez also worked briefly as a backup dancer for Janet Jackson and was set to tour with her on the "Janet World Tour" but opted to pursue her own projects instead.

Lopez's first screen role was in the made-for-TV movie "Nurses on the Line: The Crash of Flight 7" in 1993. She then appeared in her first film, the drama "My Family," in 1995. That same year, she starred in the film "Money Train" and alongside Robin Williams in Francis Ford Coppola's comedy-drama "Jack." These roles helped solidify her presence in Hollywood.

In 1997, Lopez had a significant year both professionally and personally. She received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her role in the film "Selena."

During this time, she also met and married Ojani Noa, a waiter at a Miami restaurant. However, their marriage ended in divorce just 11 months later. Despite the split, Lopez and Noa remained amicable, although legal issues arose when Lopez sued Noa to prevent him from publishing a book about their marriage.

Following her success in "Selena," Lopez wanted to explore her Latin roots further and recorded a demo tape in Spanish. However, her manager suggested she sing in English instead. While continuing to pursue acting and appearing in films like "Anaconda" and "Out of Sight," she worked on her debut album.

Released in 1999, the album featured the hit single "If You Had My Love," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making Lopez the first artist since Britney Spears to achieve this feat with a debut single.

In 2000, Lopez made headlines when she attended the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards wearing a plunging green Versace silk chiffon dress. The dress generated significant controversy and media attention, with images of Lopez in the dress being downloaded over half a million times from the Grammy website in just 24 hours following the event.

After her debut album's success, Jennifer Lopez decided to refine her image and embrace her status as a sex symbol. She changed her stage name to J.Lo, a nickname given to her by her fans, and released her second album, also titled "J.Lo," on January 23, 2001. The album achieved commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.

During this time, Lopez ended her relationship with Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs. Combs was facing alleged gun charges, which had a negative impact on Lopez's burgeoning career. Combs later changed his own identity to Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.

Beyond these developments, Jennifer Lopez has continued to achieve further successes in her career. She has released multiple albums, starred in numerous films, and established herself as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.

She has also ventured into other business ventures, including fashion and fragrance lines. Additionally, Lopez has become a mother, giving birth to two children, twins named Max and Emme, during her marriage to singer Marc Anthony
